New HNC Fellowship Opportunities

In honor of the Hopkins-Nanjing Center’s 30th year, we are excited to announce several new fellowship opportunities for students applying for fall 2017. Thanks to the generosity of the HNC alumni community and other donors we are able to offer these fellowships in addition to awarding HNC fellowships to 100% of students who apply for financial aid by the application deadline. New Fellowships for the Hopkins-Nanjing Center's 30th year Future Leader Fellowships for MAIS Students The HNC is continuing to guarantee all incoming MAIS students who apply for financial aid $10,000 per year of study.  International Scholar Fellowship This full-tuition fellowship will be awarded to an international student (non-US citizen or dual citizen) enrolling in Fall 2017. This fellowship is open to all HNC programs. Five things I wish I’d known about the HNC application process

I’m student blogger Anna Woods, currently studying at SAIS DC in the SAIS MA part of the HNC Certificate/SAIS MA program. Some of the following points apply to all HNC applicants, while others are specifically to do with the HNC Certificate/SAIS MA application process. I hope they can be of use to prospective applicants! 1. There may be more outside funding than you might think . It pays to look beyond HNC fellowships when funding your time at the Hopkins-Nanjing Center. China’s growing importance is something that organisations and governments around the world are increasingly recognising in the funding they give out. Hence, it’s a great idea to do some individual research for opportunities you might be eligible for. Terms for different fellowships vary, but it may be the case that master’s fellowships will fund the MAIS or HNC Certificate/SAIS MA programs, or study abroad scholarships will fund the HNC Certificate. Zumba in Nanjing

Before I arrived at the Hopkins Nanjing Center, I didn’t really know what my life would look like in Nanjing outside of the graduate level classes taught in Chinese . I knew that I would live on campus with a Chinese roommate  presumably eat a mix of food from the onsite cafeteria and outside restaurants, and likely spend a bit of time exploring the city and beyond. There were things that I never expected to join in with, and chief among them was dancing to catchy Latin songs at the Nanjing University track alongside retirees, students and young kids. A typical scene mid-dance Allow me to explain. Via a WeChat group (because how else would anything be coordinated in China, ever) a handful of Zumba enthusiasts alerted an audience of 200 or so Nanjing-based WeChat users to when and where a gathering of Zumba dancing would take place: usually Wednesday and Sunday afternoons at the Nanjing University track (which is a convenient 5 minute walk from the Hopkins Nanjing Center).
