2017 MAIS Thesis Defense Topics

At the end of the 2016-2017 Academic year nearly 40 Hopkins-Nanjing Center MAIS students defended their theses. The wide variety of compelling topics speaks to the intellectual curiosity and wide-ranging academic interests of the HNC’s unique Chinese and international student body. While at the HNC, MAIS students choose a concentration area from among the six different areas of study offered: International Politics; International Economics; International and Comparative Law; Energy, Resources and Environment; Chinese Studies; and American Studies. During their two years of study, international and Chinese MAIS students are required to research, write, and orally defend a thesis in their “target language.” Chinese students complete their thesis in English and international students complete their thesis in Chinese. To help prepare for thesis research and writing, MAIS students have thesis advisers in their target language and participate in thesis prep courses that focus on research approaches and connecting their thesis topics to larger questions of China, the U.S. and the world.

Below is a sample of theses that highlight the breadth and depth of research being conducted by HNC students who graduated this spring.

            Basketball at the Hopkins-Nanjing Center

            Student blogger Emily Rivera, HNC Certificate ’18, writes about the HNC basketball team’s win at their first game at the HNC basketball court. The HNC Basketball Team (中美中心的篮球队) Earlier this semester, students and faculty gathered around the HNC basketball court to support the basketball team at their very first home game. Sitting on the sidelines, enthusiastic HNC fans filled the court with “加油” and “中美中心.” Although the winter weather had everyone bundled up in their scarves and hoodies, fans still sat happily on the sidelines sharing food and thoughts on the game with their neighbors. The HNC basketball team is another way for students to become involved on campus and to exchange cultures and language outside of the everyday classroom. Student-run groups and teams make up the bulk of student extracurricular activities.             Traveling to Shanxi Province

            HNC students often use their holiday breaks to travel to other parts of China and Asia. One of the HNC student bloggers, Amanda Bogan, spent the National Day holiday exploring Shanxi Province. One of my favorite parts of life in China has always been traveling to different parts of the country, easily and affordably, by train. This past week we had our first major holiday, a total of seven days to celebrate National Day (国庆节). I took advantage of this opportunity to journey north, up to Shanxi Province. Although travel during the National Holiday can be notorious for large crowds and sold out tickets, I was lucky enough to book round trip tickets only a few days in advance, thanks to my wonderful and patient roommate, Wu-Ye (吴叶), who helped me purchase the tickets online. By standard train, Shanxi is roughly 16 hours from Nanjing. This may sound like a long trip at first, but we got on our train in the evening and had tickets for a sleeper car, so at least half the time was spent sleep...
